Batis Books is a small, independent publishing company based in Edinburgh, Scotland.
What Is a batis?
A batis is a small bird typically found throughout Southern Africa – but Batis works with authors from all over.

What we publish
We publish at least six books a year, with our first books arriving on bookstore shelves in early 2026. Currently we only publish books in print; we do not produce e-books or audiobooks.
Our 2026 list focuses on writers from South Africa, and in years to come we hope to represent writers from more Southern African countries. We also commit to publishing at least one book by a Scottish writer each year.
Submissions
We are open to submissions of fiction, non-fiction and poetry, as well as translations of books into English from other languages. You do not need to have an agent to approach us. Please see our submissions page for more information.
Distribution
All of our books are distributed in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland by Combined Book Services and marketed to the trade by Compass IPS.
Select Batis titles are available in South Africa, as well as in select bookshops in Namibia and Botswana. In these countries Batis Books are distributed by Booksite and marketed to the trade by Blue Weaver.
