A batis is a small bird typically found in Southern Africa – but Batis works with authors from around the world.

Batis Books is a small, independent publishing company based in Edinburgh, Scotland.

We focus on books of literary excellence, publishing poetry, literary fiction, and selected non-fiction titles. We publish both début and experienced authors.

We launch in early 2026. We are currently open to submissions of manuscripts and proposals for books.
Batis is published by Nick Mulgrew.

Nick was born in Durban in 1990. A Mandela Rhodes Scholar, he is the founder and publisher of the award-winning poetry press uHlanga, and the author of four books, the most recent of which is A Hibiscus Coast (2021). His debut collection of short fiction, Stations, was longlisted for the Edge Hill Short Story Prize in the U.K..

Currently he lives in Edinburgh and is a PhD candidate at the University of Dundee.
