Paul's first book, Whoever You Choose to Love, was published in 2004 by Wiedenfeld & Nicolson to great acclaim: "From bedsitland to the more quotidian tableaux of the suburban family home, [...] Colette Paul writes uncommonly affecting stories about Scottish women who both feel and seem just one step out of line" – i-D Magazine; a "stunningly perceptive [...] collection of slick, quirky shorts which have vast scope and cutting wit" – Esquire; "[An] amazing debut collection of short stories" – The Scotsman.
Such great press should make you think two things: 1) "Remember when glossy magazines used to do serious book reviews?!" and 2) "If this was how good she was in 2004, what about in 2026?" The answers are: I know, right?; and, even better!
These are offbeat, often moving, and greatly enjoyable stories, mostly set in Glasgow, focusing on ordinary people facing the pitfalls of ordinary life, and written with great wit and pacing.
This is Batis Books' first Scottish publication, and we couldn't be more proud of it.
